Attending the UN Summit of the Future: A Reflection on Global Progress and Anjiro Initiative’s Role in Shaping Change
Attending the United Nations Summit of the Future was an unforgettable experience, placing us at the heart of global discourse where pressing challenges—climate change, economic inequality, access to education, and peacebuilding—were confronted by world leaders, policymakers, and advocates. The summit wasn’t just a meeting of heads of state; it was a convergence of innovative thinkers and determined activists, all sharing a vision for a more just and sustainable future.
From the outset, there was a collective determination to tackle the complexities of our world. What resonated most with us was the optimism that permeated the event. While the challenges are immense, there was a profound sense that solutions are within reach if we work together. This spirit of global solidarity was particularly evident in the discussions surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with SDG 4—quality education for all—holding special significance for us.
Education as the Foundation for Lasting Change
For Anjiro Initiative, SDG 4 is more than just a global goal—it is the foundation of our work in Madagascar. We are committed to ensuring that vulnerable students, who often face extreme poverty, geographic isolation, and resource shortages, receive the quality education they deserve. The Summit of the Future echoed our belief that education is the foundation for sustainable development, and that investing in education is an investment in a brighter future for all.
Our partnerships in the field have been vital to the success of our programs. With their deep community insight, we have been tackling the root causes of educational inequality, from teacher training to infrastructure gaps. This reflects the summit’s broader call to reimagine governance and build a more effective, inclusive multilateral system to solve 21st-century crises.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Another central theme at the summit was the importance of digital inclusion, highlighted by discussions around the Global Digital Compact. As technology rapidly transforms our world, Anjiro Initiative is addressing the urgent need for digital literacy in underserved areas of Madagascar. In one community with limited access to electricity, we will build a computer lab to equip students with essential digital skills. This aligns with the summit’s vision for ensuring equitable access to digital resources, an essential step toward leveling the playing field for all students.
By providing digital literacy opportunities, we are not only preparing students for future job markets but also fostering a new generation of leaders who can drive sustainable development in their own communities.
Gender Equality in Education: A Path to Societal Transformation
The summit also emphasized gender equality as a critical pillar of sustainable development. At Anjiro Initiative, we prioritize gender equality in education, recognizing the far-reaching benefits it brings. Educating girls leads to improved health outcomes, greater socio-economic mobility, and reduced violence—key outcomes that are essential to building stronger, more resilient societies.
Our work in Madagascar is committed to ensuring that girls have access to safe, supportive learning environments. We believe that when girls are educated, they not only uplift themselves but their entire communities, contributing to lasting change.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Reflecting on the summit, we are struck by how closely aligned Anjiro Initiative’s goals are with the global vision shared at the United Nations Summit of the Future. From promoting quality education and gender equality to addressing digital inclusion, our work in Madagascar resonates deeply with the calls for global solidarity and action heard at the summit.
Being part of this global conversation was inspiring. The youth delegates, in particular, left a lasting impression as they called for systemic change and demanded a seat at the table. Their voices are a powerful reminder that our work is not just about securing a better future for ourselves, but for future generations.
At Anjiro Initiative, we are energized to continue the important work we do and to engage with others who share our commitment to equity, sustainability, and peace. The Summit of the Future reminded us that progress is not only possible but inevitable when we come together with a shared purpose.
The future is ours to shape. Let’s get to work.
